What Is an Ebook Promotion? (With FAQs)

In today's digital world, ebooks are a go-to choice for readers seeking convenience, variety, and accessibility. However, for authors navigating the crowded digital marketplace, capturing the attention of potential readers can be challenging. That's where ebook promotions come in. If you’re an author hoping to sell more copies and increase brand awareness, learning more about promoting your ebook can really change your marketing game. To help, I'm here to answer your questions on the topic:

What is an ebook promotion?

What is an ebook promotion?

An ebook promotion is a marketing strategy used by authors and publishers to increase the visibility and sales of their e-books. By temporarily reducing the price of the e-book to $0.99, $1.99, $2.99 (or maybe even $0.00!), it becomes more affordable and attractive to potential readers. This can help generate buzz, attract new readers, and boost sales during the promotion period.

What are the advantages of running an ebook promotion?

Running an ebook promotion can offer several advantages that can benefit you in the long run. While you may miss out on the initial full price of the sale, here are some reasons why running an ebook promotion is worth considering:

  • Lowering the bar of entry: Readers who are not familiar with you or your work are more likely to decide to buy your book if it's set at a discounted price. By offering a lower price, you minimize the risk for potential readers, making it easier for them to give your book a chance.

  • Generating attention for your other writing: If your book is part of a series, discounting the first book can be a great strategy to hook readers in, as they may be more willing to pay full price for the following books in the collection once they're invested in the story and the characters. Even if your book isn't part of a series, running a promo can introduce new readers to your writing style and increase their interest in exploring your other works.

  • Establishing expertise in your field: If you're a nonfiction author, running a price promotion can show new readers you have expertise in your field so they know who to look to when they need knowledge in your field.

How much does it cost to advertise my ebook promotion?

Advertising costs for book promotions can vary depending on the platforms and strategies you choose. For social media ads, such as Facebook ads, you have control over your budget. The more you spend, the more people you can reach. For example, if you spend $5/day, you might reach anywhere from 1.6k to 4.5k people in your target audience. Increasing your budget to $20/day could potentially reach 5.2k to 15k people. So, the more you invest, the more visibility and engagement you can expect.

To make the most out of your book promotion, I recommend budgeting around $500 for advertising. This includes expenses for email promotions, social media ads, BookBub ads, and more. However, keep in mind that this is just a suggestion, and you can spend less or more based on your specific goals and budget. Ultimately, the amount you choose to spend should align with the results you're aiming for and the resources you have available.

How long should I run an ebook promotion?

The answer to this one depends on where you're listing your ebook:

When listing your ebook exclusively on Amazon

If you're only listing your ebook on Amazon, you can take advantage of Amazon's Kindle Countdown deal, where you can run the promotion for a maximum of five days. The great thing about this option is that Amazon automatically adjusts the price for you. For example, if your ebook is usually priced at $6.99, it will be automatically reduced to $0.99 during the promo days. And when the promotion is over, the price returns to its original amount. This means less manual work for you. However, there's a catch–your ebook needs to be enrolled in Amazon's KDP Select program.

When listing your ebook on multiple retailers

If you do have your ebook listed on multiple retailers and want to run a promotion, you'll need to manually set the promo price yourself. This gives you more control over the duration of the promotion. You can choose to have it last for a whole month, make your ebook permanently priced at $0.99, or just have it on sale for one day. It's completely up to you.

How can I raise awareness of my ebook promotion?

If you're running an ebook promotion and want to raise awareness, there are several strategies you can use to spread the word. Here are six things you can do to maximize the visibility of your ebook promo:

1. Share among your network

Utilize your social media platform and email newsletter to highlight the promotion. Provide a direct link to your ebook on Amazon or the e-book retailer platform so readers can take advantage of the discount. If the promotion is time-limited, make sure to create a sense of urgency so people feel compelled to act quickly.

2. Run ads on BookBub

BookBub is a popular platform where readers can subscribe to email lists to receive updates on genres they are interested in or books they might enjoy. Take advantage of this by running ads for your target audience on the site. These ads can be targeted toward readers of specific genres or even authors within those genres.

3. Run social media ads

Consider running ads on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to increase the visibility of your ebook deal. Social media ads can be highly effective in reaching a wide audience and generating interest in your promotion. Experimenting with various ad images and headlines is beneficial to determine what truly appeals to your audience. Once you identify the ad variations that drive the most sales, it's wise to keep leveraging those successful formats.

4. Get your book highlighted in a newsletter

Look for specific promotional newsletters that focus on highlighting ebook deals. For example, Written Word Media offers promo stacks for authors, making it easier for you to get your book noticed. Getting your ebook featured in a newsletter can give it a significant boost in visibility. Here are some other discount promo newsletters:

5. Utilize other organizations

Think about how you can collaborate with other organizations or companies whose target audience aligns with the readers of your book. If you're a nonfiction author, reach out to organizations that cater to your book's target audience and ask if they would be willing to promote your ebook deal through their email list or social media platforms.

6. Get another author to promote in their newsletter

If you write fiction, consider doing a newsletter swap with another author in your genre. This involves asking another author to send out an email about your ebook discount to their newsletter subscribers, and in return, you can promote their book or offer in your own newsletter. This strategy allows you to tap into a different audience and expand your reach.

What should I include in ad graphics for ebook promotions?

When it comes to creating ad graphics for ebook promotions, there are a few key elements that you should definitely include. These elements will help catch the attention of potential readers and entice them to take action. Here's what you should include in your ad graphics:

Book cover

Start by featuring the eye-catching cover of your ebook. Make sure the cover is clear and visually appealing, as it will be the first thing that attracts people's attention. If possible, use a version of the cover that looks like an ebook, as this will help viewers make the connection.

Promo price

Highlight the discounted or promotional price of your ebook on the ad graphic. This could be shown as a text overlay or as part of the ad design. This information will immediately communicate the value of your ebook and make it more enticing for potential readers.

Download button

Include a clear and visible button on the ad graphic that says "Download" or a similar call-to-action. This button should be near the promo price or the book cover. By including a download button, you make it easy for viewers to take the next step and download your ebook straight away.

Conclusion

Ebook promotions can be a great way to boost visibility for your book, and in many cases increase downloads of your ebook. In order to maximize the promotion opportunity, it is wise to set aside a marketing budget to reach more readers through different promotion channels.
